The diagram below shows three parts labeled A, B, and C, of Earth's orbit around the sun.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which of these best arranges the parts of the orbit from slowest to fastest speed of Earth in them? C → B → A A → B → C B → C → A A → C → B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im stuck in between A or C. I need help guys :( explanation would be very much appreciated

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i seem to recall some law that states that the area swept out in a given time frame remains relatively constant.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

also consider the pull of gravity .. we fall into the sun, we accelerate due to its gravity and slingshot around it to slow down enough to get pulled back in ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right, i just read keplers second law :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now i think it is A nbut im not so sure

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lol, i told him to write it :) C is the slowest end, A is the fastest.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha :) so C B A right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

thats what im going with yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much~ can you help me with another? its quite simple subtraction really but i want to make sure i read the question right :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i can try ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok the question is: what is the difference between the orbital periods of Mercury and Earth? the table is : Mercury 0.39 Earth 1.0 since i see the word 'difference' i istantly thought subtraction so i did this 1.0 - 0.39 and it gave me 0.61 as my answer am i right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@amistre64

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the earth orbits the sun in 1 year does this mean mercury orbits it in .39ths of a year?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ii guess so

OpenStudy (amistre64):

mercury has an 88 day orbital period .... earth is 365 88/365 = .24, not .39 either way, i would say the difference is subtraction yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in this case, my answer would be 0.61, right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i would agree to that, yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alrighty :) thank you for helping me

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks , ill need it haha
