Prewriting: Developing a Research Proposal research in the dictionary In the previous lesson, you began investigating the topic of your research paper by identifying specific research questions. In this lesson, you will continue with your investigation by writing a research proposal. A research proposal is a broad overview of the topic, scope, and general direction of your research paper. A research proposal does not have to be too specific, nor does it represent the final outline of your paper. It is just a way to start putting your ideas together and thinking about potential areas of focus for your paper. At the end of this lesson, you will submit your research proposal to your teacher for feedback. Your teacher will help you identify possible problems with your approach. For example, your teacher might suggest that you research more information, or add another subtopic to your paper. He or she may also suggest that you narrow your topic to make your paper more focused. Whatever feedback you receive, you will have time to rethink your proposal before you start researching information. Objectives Draft a 1-page research proposal explaining topic, major research questions, and potential areas of focus Identify the differences between primary and secondary sources and examples of each source type Understand writing conventions for capitalization
In the last lesson, you learned about the difference between primary and secondary sources of research. You will use both types of sources as part of your research. Click on the link below to watch the "Old Faithful Sources" Discovery Education™ streaming movie. (Note: Due to the length of this video clip, it may take a few minutes to download.)
Complete these activities. Read pp. 444–447 in The Essential Guide to Language, Writing, & Literature for guidelines on gathering information for your research paper. Remember that at this point, you are continuing to do preliminary research to explore research questions and develop a focus for your paper topic. Use the strategies outlined in the textbook to make your research more efficient and focused. Limit your research topic by following these guidelines: Choose an idea that will interest you and your readers. Limit your exploration of the idea to a subject that you can find information about. Choose a subject that you already have some insights about. Develop a 1-page proposal explaining your topic and areas of focus. Your research proposal should include the following: a short paragraph that introduces your topic an explanation of the reason this topic interests you an explanation of the research questions you plan to address in your research paper an explanation of potential additional topics you identified that relate to your main topic preliminary ideas about potential sources you will use to gather information You will submit your research proposal to your teacher later in this lesson.
