what is the first stage in the formation of coal? lignite anthracite coal peat bituminous coal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a i think

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

http://eis.uow.edu.au/outburst/images/Coal%20Rank.jpg I think this diagram should help, it doesn't have all the stages you list but anthracite coal is very dense and is the last stage of coal formation Lignite is formed slightly after peat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait don't say it i know i should not give answers out i know

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

This stuff is interesting because the birth of organic chemistry was from coal tar (development of dies I think the guys name was perkins). I am sure coal is still used as a source of organic precursors

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Not going to say anything klamousekia :D

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

If you make your guess I will tell you if you are right but just check out what i posted up

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

brown coal is just another term for lignite

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you also help me with this one? what is the first step in the refining of petroleum? cracking drilling cooling distillation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Australopithecus

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Drilling I would assume would not be labeled as the first step of refining because you are simply just moving it from one place to another. They heat it distil it into its many parts, then they do a thing called thermal cracking which essentially changes large molecules that aren't of value into the smaller desired molecules. Cooling is probably the final step You should check your notes though, I wish I had mine on me I have a really good chapter from a previous course on this material.
