7 4/5 - 3/5

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Do you know how to make 7 and 4/5 into a improper fraction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Ok, well we can do this another way without making it improper. I can teach you that later if you want? Ok so let's just put aside the 7 for now and let's look at \(\dfrac{4}{5}\) - \(\dfrac{3}{5}\) Let's remember that \(\dfrac{4}{5}\) - \(\dfrac{3}{5}\) = \(\dfrac{4-3}{5}\)

sammixboo (sammixboo):

What is 4 - 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1

sammixboo (sammixboo):

Right! So \(\dfrac{4}{5}\) - \(\dfrac{3}{5}\) = \(\dfrac{1}{5}\) Now bringing back all the whole numbers, which was only 7, we just plop it on there to get \(7 \dfrac{1}{5}\)
