The theater arts committee estimated that it would sell 200 tickets for its upcoming play. The committee actually sold 224 tickets. What was the percent error in the committee’s estimate?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 12%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is there multiple choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What method did you use?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 12% i just want to be sure

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

What was the ABSOLUTE ERROR? 200-224 = -24 What was the % ERROR? -24/224 = -10.71% You must decide what is the BASE. The REAL number is 224. The Estimate is 200. Don't divide by the estimate. You should also see this as an example of how to show your work. :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i was wrong TK thanks for pointing it out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You had the right idea. You just wandered off on the BASE.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tk so the answer is 10.71%?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

I would report it as negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thanks

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Of course, the negative may not be on your answer choices. That would be annoying but acceptable.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When I did it I got about 11%

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Fair enough. Your instructions may also contain rounding rules.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what is the answer?

jabez177 (jabez177):

The answer is positive 10.71. Because it's absolute value so you always have to make it positive...

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Hogwash. Instructions should be clear.
