The main conflict is when Mersault was arrested for the murder of an Arab. And it is an internal conflict that strongly takes a toll on Mersault's main character.

An early development in the plot was when of the book is reached when the jury delivers its verdict: Mersault is to be decapitated by guillotine in a public place.
