The figure below shows a shaded circular region inside a larger circle: A shaded circle is shown inside another larger circle. The radius of the smaller circle is labeled as r and the radius of the larger circle is labeled as R. On the right side of the image is written r equal to 2 inches and below r equal to 2 inches is written R equal to 5 inches. What is the probability that a point chosen inside the larger circle is not in the shaded region? 84% 50% 42% 16% help ill fan and medal please help

OpenStudy (mrnood):

it just the ratio of the 2 areas the large cirvcle is pi 5^2 the small circle is pi 2^2 so the probability p that it IS in the smaller circle is the ratio of areas the probability that is NOT is simply 1-p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (mrnood):

so - do oyu have an answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give me a sec im doing that now also

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im multiplying correct?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

work out the ration of the 2 areas A/a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure :/

OpenStudy (mrnood):

What is the area A of the big circle (leave it in terms of pi) What is the area a of the small circle (leave it in terms of pi)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pi is 3.14 so um.... give me a sec i think ...idk

OpenStudy (mrnood):

never mind the value of pi - just leave it as pi in the answer

OpenStudy (mrnood):

If you do not know how to work out the area of a circle radius 2 and a circle radius 5 then I'm afraid you need to go back and revise that before you can answer this question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

look im just not good with areas alright its not my thing!

OpenStudy (mrnood):

btw - I GAVE you the formula above

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"the large cirvcle is pi 5^2 the small circle is pi 2^2"

OpenStudy (mrnood):

so work out those values (BUT LEAVE pi in the answer)
