help? 1/x - 1/6x^3 + 1/120x^5?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

first find the Lowest Common Multiple of x , 6x^3 and 120 x^5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 1?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

a simple example of finding the LCM is LCM of 2x , 4x^2 ? the LCM is 4x^2 because 2x divides into it exactly and so of course does 4x^2 very often the LCM is the highest term

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- i should have said the lowest term into which each will divide

OpenStudy (welshfella):

sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

what is the lowest term that x and 6x^3 and 120x^5 will all divide into?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

do you see that its 120x^5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes,

OpenStudy (welshfella):

good now we must go about converting 1/x and 1/6x^3 to fractions which have 120x^5 as the denominator We can only add fractions with the same denominator eg we cant add 1/2 and 1/4 but we can add 1/4 and 3/4)

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so we need to convert 1/x to something / 120x^5 we do this multiply top and bottom by 120x^4
