We want to get -3y in the first equation, so what do we do?

We Subtract 3 From Both Sides

Elimination means that you will need to multiply th equations by a factor so that way if you add them or subtract them, they will elimate one varaible, and let you solve for the other variable.

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

So, what number can you multiply the first equation by to get -3y. So basically, lets call this number x and we have just y. So for what value of x is this true: \(\sf xy = -3y\) What should x be equal to? so that way we can multiply x to the first equation which is \(\sf y+z=6\)
