I am doing my math homework and I just do not understand this problem, no matter how many resources I have looked at. Please help me 14x^2 y^2 + 19xy-3
Hey :D what do you think we do first @bantaray
well I think we have to look at the GCF for 14 and -3. Things that equal 14 are 7*2 and 14*1
the only thing that can go into 3 is -1*3
Hmm lets start from the beginning :D
Ok first we Multiply 14*y^2 by -3, which is -42 right?
wait I don't know why we multiply 14 by -3
Cause we are factoring right? Ok we get 42 Which two numbers add up to 19*y and multiply to -42?
hint: 21y and?
2
close but ur missing something hint: i said -42
-2 :)
sorry, I meant to type that to begin with
Good so we have 21*y and -2*y Ok now we Rewrite 19yx as the sum of 21yx and −2yx to get \[14y ^{2}x ^{2}+21yx-2yx-3\] right? HWat do we factor out?
Wow its 12:23am and igtg to sleep soon but dont want to leave you without help so lets speed this up a bit :D @bantaray
sorry! don't let me keep you! I don't we have to fact the 21
like 7*3
21 was from the question i asked about -42
Ok so lets speed this up Next we factor out common terms in the first two terms, then in the last two terms ang get \[7yx(2yx+3)-(2yx+3)\] whats the last step?
I am so lost! I don't want to keep you from sleep. It's only 9:26pm here and I can probably text my professor about it. is should just be (2yx+3) - (2yx+3)
Nope we factor 2yx+3 out and our left with \[(2yx+3)(7yx-1)\]
Sorry if u dont understand b.c i really have to go but let me ask someone to help explain more @rational @triciaal @kidrah69
thank you @jagr2713 I really appreciate it!
Anytime :D
is this what we are looking at? \[14x^2 y^2 + 19xy^{-3}\] or \[14x^2 y^2 + 19xy~{-3}\]
and then, what is it you are trying to do with it?
