THE HISTORY OF THE NOVEL A novel is defined as "a fictional prose narrative of considerable length, typically having a plot that is unfolded by the actions, speech, and thoughts of the characters." The epic poetry of Homer is a stepping-stone in the development of the novel, since its extended narratives made room for complex plots, several themes, and detailed character development. Some argue that the Greek romances were actually novels. Others include adventure stories from Spain and Italy as novels, though most do not agree. English and French chivalric romances are also important precursors to the novel. Shifting moral tides and the personalities of monarchs in late seventeenth-century England also affected the novel, perhaps as much as any other single influence. Elizabethan drama is generally considered the golden age of English Drama. However, changes in politics and society led to the closing of all public theaters. When drama was reinstated, it was considered to be inferior to its Elizabethan predecessors. Novels filled the void left by this decline in drama. The slow, steady triumph of virtues and lofty ideals is more suited for extended prose narratives than drama. By the end of eighteenth century, the novel had established itself with the general reading public. The newly literate working classes and women from all classes provided a strong demand for novels. Don Quixote, by the Spanish writer, Miguel Cervantes, is considered the first European novel by many literary scholars. The most commonly argued candidates for first novel in English are Samuel Richardson's Pamela: or, Virtue Rewarded, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, and Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. It remains difficult to determine what the "first novel" was. The novel today is varied in form, very popular, and respected as an art form. The novel you read, Silas Marner, is one of those respected novels.
