Passage Dover Beach by Matthew Arnold (excerpt) The Sea of Faith Was once, too, at the full, and round earth's shore Lay like the folds of a bright girdle furled. But now I only hear Its melancholy, long, withdrawing roar, Retreating, to the breath Of the night-wind, down the vast edges drear And naked shingles of the world. In this excerpt, Arnold makes a connection between religious faith and the movement of the sea. What inference can be drawn from this analogy? Arnold believes that with time faith will eventually return. Arnold laments the waning power of faith. Arnold sees religious faith as something that will ebb and flow. Arnold thinks that a lack of faith may leave human kind vulnerable.
