Use the order of operations to simplify the following algebraic expression.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@rational help me please????

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

Okay, so you know the order of operations, correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PEMDAS

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

Okay, well what this needs first is to combine like terms. So combine the ones that are being multiplied by x (6x, -15x, and 4x)

OpenStudy (black_ninja123):

If you use PEMDAS it will be really easy to get the answer

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

I THINK combining the like terms is first...let me check if I'm correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the value of X?

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

X is a number you don't know. It's literally a number. But you don't know the value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how do we find it, thats the only trouble I'm having.

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

Okay, I'm sorry. Don't combine the like term first. Use PEMDAS. So theres no grouping symbols, or exponents. So the next thing to do is division (-15x / 3, which equals -5x) Do you see what I did there? \[6x-15x \div3+4x \times 2\]\[6x-5x+4x \times 2\]

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

What do you think is next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1x+8x=?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see...u don't need to know x!!

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

1x+8x = 9x Also remember 1x = x (because one times a number is that number. :))

OpenStudy (hugsnotughs):

Yes, you don't need to know x for equations like this. :) Great job. :D
