Shoot

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first we find the slope by using the slope formula slope(m) = (y2 - y1) / (x2 - x1) our points are : (4,1)...x1 = 4 and y1 = 1 (5,2)...x2 = 5 and y2 = 2 now we sub slope(m) = (2 - 1) / (5 - 4) can you finish and tell me the slope ?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

1/1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes...or just 1 Now we use y = mx + b slope (m) = 1 you can use either of your points...(5,2)...x = 5 and y = 2 and since we know m and we have our x and y points, all we need to do is find b, the y intercept. now we sub y = mx + b 2 = 1(5) + b can you finish and solve for b, the y intercept ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you stuck ??

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you understand how I arrived at : 2 = 1(5) + b ??

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

yes i got that part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2 = 1(5) + b ---- solving for b 2 = 5 + b -- subtract 5 from both sides 2 - 5 = 5 - 5 + b -- combine terms -3 = b still with me so far ? questions ?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now we have the equation : y = 1x + (-3).....or y = x - 3 understand that ?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

yes i think so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because m , the slope, is 1 and b, the y intercept, is -3 I took out the (x,y) points and subbed everything else back into y = mx + b and got : y = 1x + (-3) which basically breaks down to y = x - 3 now we need it in standard form which is : Ax + By = C A cannot be negative and there can be no fractions. y = x - 3 --- subtract x from both sides -x + y = -3 -- multiply by -1 because we do not want A to be negative x - y = 3 <== here is your standard form any questions ?

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ts kind confusing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It can get confusing with all the formulas and stuff...just remember, that in y = mx + b, the slope is in the m position and the y intercept is in the b position. It is just gonna take practice at doing these types of problems. But soon, you will be helping others learn it.

OpenStudy (countrygirl1431):

ok thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem :)
