5 < 2 - 3y < 12 --- subtract 2 5 - 2 < 2 - 2 - 3y < 12 - 2 -- combine terms 3 < -3y < 10 -- now divide everything by -3 and change inequality signs -1 > y > -10/3 or -10/3 < y < -1
