Can someone explain this to me? The lessons for this module are being vague. http://i.imgur.com/6icbdVx.png

OpenStudy (mrnood):

so what happens to the sign of successive terms?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seems that it's changing every other term.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

that's right - and what happens to a negative number when you raise it to even power and ot odd power (e.g. 1,2,3,4....)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if you ask my calculator it'll always be negative. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OpenStudy (mrnood):

I didn't ask your calculator -3^1 = -3 -3^2= +9 -3^3= -27......

OpenStudy (mrnood):

so in order to get alternating + and - numbers what can we tall about the number we raise?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would that mean the 2 would become a negative?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

yes - we must have a -2 in the brackets NOW look at the first term - it's 9 if we have n=0 for the first term WHICH of the answers gives a value =9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would it be the misclick answer, since 2^0 gives a -1?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

if 2^0 was -1 then the answer would be -9 what is -2^0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

no

OpenStudy (mrnood):

try your calculator if oyu do not already know 2^0 =?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

try your calculator if oyu do not already know -2^0 =?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's still giving me -1.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

I don't think so are you using the x^y function -2 x^y -1 =?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm just plugging in what was said: -2^0 and the calculator is spitting out -1.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

OK I see what is wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

User error?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

(and my post above is wrong) the calculator reads that as 0- (2 ^-1) You need touse the (+/-) button to change 2 to -2 2 (+/-) x^y -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The subtraction key? Because that's still giving me -1.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

NO - it's not the subtraction key It is marked +/- and it changes the sign of the 2 to -2 BEFORE you r do the exponent (and my post above is wrong) the calculator reads that as 0- (2 ^-1) You need touse the (+/-) button to change 2 to -2 2 (+/-) x^y 0=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah.. Seems that I don't have that key on my calculator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Regardless, thanks for the help.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

that is unlikely it is an important function- but use the calculator in Windows if not ANYHOW maybe you remember x^0 = 1 for ANY vale of x so -2^0 = 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can take a picture of said calculator if you'd like, but I see.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

http://www.lowpriceofficesupplies.co.uk/Item/910334.html even this simple one has it - next to the decimal anyhow back to the question if -2^0 =1 then what is the first term of the last option (the misclick)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2^0 = 1 -2^1 = -2 -2^2 = 4 -2^3 = -8 ... Correct?

OpenStudy (mrnood):

yes correct and what happens if oyu multiply those numbers by 9 ?(compare with original series....)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then it begins to equal the original set of numbers.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

;-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks a million for the help.
