OpenStudy (jjuden):

The height of one square pyramid is 6 m. A similar pyramid has a height of 12 m. The volume of the smaller pyramid is 400 m^3 a. Scale factor of the smaller pyramid to the larger pyramid in simplest form. b. Ratio of the areas of the bases of the smaller pyramid to the larger pyramid.

OpenStudy (jjuden):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is the ratio of the heights?

OpenStudy (jjuden):

1:2

OpenStudy (jjuden):

i think

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes correct

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that's the scale factor of small to large

OpenStudy (jjuden):

so that solves a but what about b

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you square each piece to get the scale factor of the areas you cube each piece to get the scale factor of the volumes

OpenStudy (jjuden):

so how do i find the area of the bases?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you cant find the area of either base on their own but you can use the scale factor 1:2 to find the ratio of the areas

OpenStudy (jjuden):

do i divide the height by the volume for the small triangle for the small triangles base area?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

1:2 1^2:2^2 ... square each piece 1:4

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the ratio of small to large, in terms of area, is 1:4 basically the larger pyramid has a base 4 times larger than the smaller pyramid's base

OpenStudy (jjuden):

ohhhhhhhhh

OpenStudy (jjuden):

thank you
