One of the primary functions of the red blood cell is to transport oxygen through the arteries to the capillary bed where it can diffuse into tissue, and then return through the veins back to the heart and lungs where it can "reoxygenate" ( pick up more O2)
As it travels in the blood, through the arteries, veins, and capillaries, oxygen is shifted. The blood cell’s job is to get oxygen throughout the body. The job of the red blood cell is to deliver oxygen to the cells of the body. As the blood cell flows through the arteries and into capillaries, oxygen is transferred to body cells. Once deoxygenated, the blood flows through veins back to the heart. From the heart, the deoxygenated blood is pumped to the lungs, where it will pick up more oxygen.
