In triangle ABC, angle A is a right angle, and angle B= 45 degrees. what is the length of BC?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use trig, since you know that b is 45 degrees, use Sin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sin is Opposite over Hypotenuse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I do that? sorry... I never understood that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[Sin 45 = 13/x\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that gave me .85

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that the sin function has a denominator of 1, even though you don't see it, set it up and cross multiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13/sin45

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Solve for that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.28?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13 divided by sin45, use your calculator. sin45 = .8509, so 13 divided by .8509 will give you your ans

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh! yeah, I was like what the heck are they talking about? yeah I'm familiar with this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright, glad you got it! :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.17 is what I got...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um, not quite...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go on google and type in calculator if you need it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

13 divided by .8509?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm using my phone.. I guess it's messed up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You know it's not 1.17 because .85 goes into 13 way more then 1 time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah... haha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

15.29?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes :), but if you want it to be precise, divide 13 by sin45, using ur calc. but yes, you are right =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it says to leave it in simplest radical form, how do I do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Schen421 ^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, I see that this is a 45 45 90 triangle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That means 2 of the sides are the same and the hypotenuse is sqrt(2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then it would be 13√2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, hold on, lemme recheck my work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh... oops my bad.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I had my calculator set to radians, make sure the calc is set on degrees, so do 13 divided by sin 45 and you should get 18.384

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then yes, that is equal to 13sqrt(2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah that makes a lot more sense... haha! but thank you so much! you were so helpful!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My bad for that, thought I had set it to degrees already haha =P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[13\sqrt{2}\] shall be the ans =p (in radical form)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:-)
