Celiac disease is disease that affect the digestive system. When people eat food containing gluten, material found in wheat product, their immune system damages or destroys their villi. What are villi and why are they important? How might the lack of villi affect a person's digestive process?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The villi of the small intestine project into the intestinal cavity, greatly increasing the surface area for food absorption and adding digestive secretions

The villi help filter your food because its in your small intestine it takes all the nutrients and sends it to the liver to go through your body.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Villi are found in our small and large intestines, and are adapted to their function by having a very large Surface Area to volume ratio. They are vital as they extract the vital nutrients from the food we eat and are absorbed into the blood supply which runs just underneath the villi, and transport these nutrients to wherever they are needed.
