HELP MEDAL AND FAN...Determine which relation is a function. A. {(–4, 3), (–2, 3), (–1, 2), (2, 5), (3, 2)} B. {(–4, 1), (–2, 3), (–2, 1), (–1, 5), (3, 2)} C. {(–4, 1), (–2, 3), (–1, 2), (3, 5), (3, 2)} D. {(–4, 1), (–2, 3), (–1, 1), (–1, 5), (3, 2)}

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

ANYONE GONNA HELP????????????????????????????????????????

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

a relationship is a function if each x value has one and only one corresponding y value

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

so which of these sets of values has only one of each x value represented?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Actually, you can have x value repeated, if, and only if, it has the same y value each time. However, you cannot have any x value which has more than one y value.

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

i've been waiting for a while now can u just give me the answer so we can be done with it??

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

@whpalmer4 ^^^^^^^

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I'm not going to give you the answer. I will tell you how to find it yourself. Those numbers, I'll take letter D as an example: {(–4, 1), (–2, 3), (–1, 1), (–1, 5), (3, 2)} they come in pairs, which are (x,y). D has (-4,1) (-2,3) (-1,1) (-1,5) (3,2) so our x values are -4,-2,-1,-1,3 respectively. Notice that -1 appears twice in the list. Does it have the same y-value each time? If it does not, then this is a relationship but not a function.

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

So it's C??

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Can you list all of the x-values for the pairs given in C?

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

it seems like it......which is y i need hlp

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

here is the list for C: {(–4, 1), (–2, 3), (–1, 2), (3, 5), (3, 2)} looks like the values for x are -4 -2 -1 3 3 agree, or disagree?

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

Agree

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

okay, what are the corresponding y values? in particular, what are the corresponding y values for the two x values where x is 3?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

here are the two I'm talking about: (3,5) (3,2) same x values, but different y values. therefore, NOT a function. C is not the correct answer.

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......D is the correct answer????

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I'll repeat what I said earlier about D: Those numbers, I'll take letter D as an example: {(–4, 1), (–2, 3), (–1, 1), (–1, 5), (3, 2)} they come in pairs, which are (x,y). D has (-4,1) (-2,3) (-1,1) (-1,5) (3,2) Notice how there are two pairs that have -1 as the first number? Do they have the same second number? If not, it is NOT a function.

OpenStudy (djbreezy):

A?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Let's look at A: {(–4, 3), (–2, 3), (–1, 2), (2, 5), (3, 2)} here are the x-values -4 -2 -1 2 3 are any of the x-values the same? If not, then it is a function.
