Which strategies can be used to solve this problem? A new company sold 4,284 pairs of boots in its first year, 3,726 pairs in its second year, and 2,125 pairs in its third year. How many more pairs did the company sell in the second and third year together than in its first year? Choose all answers that are correct. A. Work backward. Add the amount of pairs sold in the second and third year together. Then subtract this amount from the pairs sold in the first year (4,284). B. Draw a diagram. Draw 3 circles and write the number of pairs sold for each year. Cross out the circle with 4,284 in it. Circle the other 2 circles and add up the amounts in the circles. C. Use logical reasoning. Combine the number of pairs sold in the second and third years (3,726 + 2,125). Then subtract the pairs sold in the first year (4,284) from the sum. D. Translate into an equation. (3,726 + 2,125) – 4,284 = p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

choose all that applys

hero (hero):

@princess1990, what are your thoughts regarding this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my answer for this one is c and d

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i right

hero (hero):

Why only c and d? What's wrong with A and B. Try explaining.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let me think

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because you have to have a greater amount to subtract a smaller amount from it, and the other one is saying that your subtracting a larger number from a smaller number. and the circle one isn't even doing any subtraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

hero (hero):

We know that B is definitely not correct, but do you think you could explain to me the significant difference between A and C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i ont know how to explain itno other way

hero (hero):

Take a closer look and A and C first. Then describe to me the similarities and differences between them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am honestly dumb right now and i only know i came up with c and d

hero (hero):

Can you tell me what A is asking us to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they are telling us to work backwards

hero (hero):

And what does working backwards involve?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Work backward. Add the amount of pairs sold in the second and third year together. Then subtract this amount from the pairs sold in the first year (4,284).

hero (hero):

You copy and pasted that, but yes. Add the amount sold in the second and third year together, then subtract that amount from that which was sold in the first year. If we did that, would we get a different answer from the one we got for C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it c and d and no i did not copy and paste dont know how to do that

hero (hero):

Here's what we'll do. Calculate the answer you got for C. Let me know what you get, then post it here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u tell me if i am right or am i wrong

hero (hero):

I will in a minute, but first calculate what you got for C.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know that what i came up with it and what with the 3rd degree here i just need help

hero (hero):

How do you know that C and D are correct if you don't know how to compute the numerical answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just know can u just tust me

hero (hero):

Do you have a calculator with you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do mental math in my head my mind is the caculation

hero (hero):

So then what is the numerical answer to the given problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just what do u need me to caculated and i will give u the aswer

hero (hero):

How many more pairs did the company sell in the second and third year together than in its first year?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add them toghether

hero (hero):

Perform this operation: (3,726 + 2,125) – 4,284

OpenStudy (anonymous):

421,567

hero (hero):

How did you get that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did what u told me to do

hero (hero):

Let's try adding just 3,726 + 2,125 first. What do you get for that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5,851

hero (hero):

Okay, great...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what the next step u act like i am pure stupid

hero (hero):

Now what is 5,851 - 4,284

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1,567

hero (hero):

Yes, that is the numerical answer to the question. So D is correct. We just have to figure out which of the other options A, B, and C would give us the same answer we got for D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

hero (hero):

You said C would also give us the same answer. I agree with that, but now we need to figure out if A or B would give us the same answer or not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the other one is C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its C and D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well gonna tag u in agian o have another question for u to check

hero (hero):

Well, actually, C and D aren't the only correct answers.
