Amphoteric vs Amphiprotic
ok so both deals with a substance being and acid or a base.... unless im wrong so I reall don't know the difference between the two. explaining using examples would be best
Amphoteric is a substance that can either act as an acid of base. Let's take water. H20 + NH3 -> OH- + NH4+ Here water donated one of its protons to ammonia to produce hydroxide ions. So it acted as an acid. Another example... H2SO4 + H20 -> HSO4- + H3O+ Since sulfuric acid is the stronger acid, it donates an acidic hydrogen to water, which accepts it. Water acts as the base, and hydronium ions form. On the other hand an amphiprotic substance is very similar to an amphoteric in which the substance can both donate and accept H+ ions.
ok nice explanation but that didn't really answer my question, i know that both is similiar but whats DIFFERENT about it? using an example?
There is nothing different. They are like synonyms. They're interchangeable.
