Why is it helpful to know the number of congruent faces in a figure when you’re finding surface area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because then you don't have to find the surface areas of more faces - you can just find the surface area of one side and then multiply that amount by the number of congruent sides. For example, a cube that is 10 inches x 10 inches x 10 inches has six congruent faces, each 10"x10". Therefore, one side =10x10=100in sq. Now just multiply 100x6 =600 sq in. for the whole box. If the faces were all different, I would have to find the surface area of each face separately and then add them all together.
