for example if you need to find the area of a rectangle in sq inches and you are given the length as 2 feet and the  width is 1 foot  you convert the 2 feet and 1 foot to inches.

Should I just put in

You have to convert both  the side lengths to the same units as the area ( well the square root of the area units)

if the area is square inches - you convert the sides  to inches
if the area is sq metres - you convert the sides to metres
