You don't need to. A square pyramid that fits perfectly inside the cube has a square base the same dimensions as any face of the cube. Think of the cube as a rectangular prism with a square base.
If a prism and a pyramid have the same base shape and the same height, the volume of the pyramid is 1/3 the volume of the prism. That's what the 1/3 in the pyramid volume formula tells you.
