FAN AND MEDAL Can someone please work through this with me?? A restaurant has x floors. The number of tables on each floor is 4 less than the number of floors. The number of chairs with each table is 1 less than the number of tables on each floor. The expression below shows the total number of chairs in the restaurant: x(x - 4)(x - 5) Part A: What type of polynomial is x(x - 4)(x - 5)? (3 points) Part B: What is the degree of the polynomial x(x - 4)? (3 points)
@peachpi
the highest exponent tells the degree. 2nd degree → x² → quadratic 3rd degree → x³ → cubic
I know that but how don't I figure that out because x(x - 4)(x - 5) is already factored..
When you multiply them together, what will the highest exponent be?
\[x ^{2}\]
No. You have 3 different factors, all of which include an x. If you can't tell by looking, you may need to multiply them out.
Oh okay hang on a sec.
x^3
right
so then what type of polynomial is it?
I got \[x ^{3}-9x+20\] so it would be a third degree trinomial right?
yes
Okay thank you so much for your help!!
you're welcome
