OpenStudy (anonymous):

can someone give me an example of a sentence with the word look in it. the word look needs to be an action verb.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@KyanTheDoodle

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

I would look for hours and hours, but I was never able to find my house.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what make the word look an action verb? how do you make it an action?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

In order to make an action verb, you need a subject: the one who is doing the action.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so for the word "sound". I would say, "Tell the soldiers to sound the alarm"?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

It could be, although I can't guarantee it. Sound would be one of the action verbs, but the main one would be "tell" the subject being you. A way to make "sound" a definite action verb would be like "The soldiers will sound the alarm."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yes. English is very complicated, so if you don't understand, I can't blame you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you understand it then? :D

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Years of getting it wrong kinda taught me how to get it right. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha, cool :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have some more, can you help me?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Sure.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! The word is "smell". I have, The cat smelled the man's boots.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yep. That's the action verb.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D the word is,feel. my sentence is " if you feel badly, you have a problem with your sense of touch".

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

This one seems kinda tricky, but I think you have it right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay :) what about this one. the word is taste. I have - Miranda tasted the spicy chicken curry.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is a stupid question but, do you know linking verbs as well?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Indeed. They connect the subject to the action.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Or adjective.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! I have some more questions then. one second :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, for the word "look" again, I have - That looks nice. is that a linking verb sentence?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Indeed. Looks can be an action verb, but can also be a linking verb. It provides the connection between the subject and the adjective.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) okay, what about the word "sound" I have the sentence - That sound is quite annoying. is that a linking verb sentence?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

It's a linking verb, but it's not sound. The sound is the subject, and the adjective is quite annoying. That means that the linking verb is "is."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, how do I make the linking verb sound?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

You can do it by replacing is with sounds. "That sounds quite annoying."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the word "smell" I have - Roses smell good.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Think of it this way: Are the roses performing any action?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think so.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Then it's a linking verb

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the word "feel" my sentence is - I feel good when the boss compliments me.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Let's see if you can do this one on your own. What do you think this one is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is a linking verb sentence :/

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Indeed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what about the word "taste" I have - The cinnamon rolls taste amazing!

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's a linking verb sentence!

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know helping verbs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, okay. can you tell me if I pick the correct one for my sentences?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have //// Plastic bags --------- keep sandwiches fresh. I think the helping verb is "can"!

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

I agree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That bear -------- eaten almost everything. I think it's has.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

It can be has or had. Either way, I'd think you're correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! They ----- already tasted the vegetable soup. I think it is have.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Hmm.. I think this one is had. "Have" is more in the present tense, and this sentence must be in the past because of "tasted."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The butter ----- melting in the bowl. I think it's is.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:) the baby ------ been irritable all day. I think it's has.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Joshua ====== want to arrive earlier than usual. may or might?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

I think it could be either.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will go with may!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You -===--- look in the drawer. can or could?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or should

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Either could be right, but can would have a better chance of being the correct answer because "look" is in present tense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Amanda ----- wearing two different socks. I think it's is.

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dad -------- work overtime today. I think it's is!

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Hm....that doesn't sound right. This sounds like it needs to be set in the future.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh, never mind I miss read the sentence sorry

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

That's okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought it was dad ---- working lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it could be - may or could?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Do you have to pick between them? Both of them are correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um, it says that I have to fill in the blank with appropriate helping verbs, I'm not sure if I can pick more than one answer :(
