When the outliers are removed, how does the mean change? dot plot with 1 on 50, 1 on 76, 1 on 78, 2 on 79, 1 on 80, 1 on 81, 2 on 82, 1 on 83 The mean decreases by 3. The mean increases by 2. The mean increases by 3. There are no outliers.

OpenStudy (help_people):

@Nnesha

OpenStudy (phi):

For each dot, write down its number, add them up and divide by the number of dots. what do you get ?

OpenStudy (help_people):

ok hold on

OpenStudy (help_people):

75?

OpenStudy (help_people):

did you want me to just do the numbers that had a dot on top of them or every single number?

OpenStudy (phi):

the places with 2 dots means you have that number twice. the numbers are 50, 76, 78, 79,79, etc

OpenStudy (phi):

First, what do you get for the total? then what do you get after dividing by the number of dots?

OpenStudy (help_people):

wait can you tell me what numbers i am using?

OpenStudy (phi):

everywhere you see one dot, use that number if you see two dots, use that number twice you will have a number for every dot (10 numbers)

OpenStudy (help_people):

i am not using 52 54 56 58 e.t.c beuase they do not haeve dots on top go them . I am doing the ones that have dots on top of the numbers

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (help_people):

77.100 (about)

OpenStudy (help_people):

i used the wplphram calclc

OpenStudy (phi):

it should add up to 770 and divide by 10 to get 77 that is the average (the mean) of the 10 numbers. Now add up all the numbers except for the 50 (50 is the "outlier" because it lies far away from the other numbers) I would do 770-50 and then divide by 9 (the number of values we have after tossing the 50)

OpenStudy (help_people):

ok let me do that hold on

OpenStudy (help_people):

80

OpenStudy (phi):

so the mean changed from 77 to 80 I got 720/9 = 80 for the second mean

OpenStudy (help_people):

yeah it was right

OpenStudy (phi):

so you go from 77 to 80 how did the mean change?

OpenStudy (help_people):

2

OpenStudy (help_people):

no omg i am not think 3

OpenStudy (help_people):

"The mean increases by 3"

OpenStudy (phi):

yes 80-77 = 3 or 77+3 = 80 increases by 3
