Please help me figure out how to do this! Which of the following is the correct factored form of the given equation? 4x2 - 11x + 6 = 0 Possible Answers: (2x + 3)(2x + 2) = 0 (2x - 3)(2x - 2) = 0 (4x - 3)(x - 2) = 0
Do you know the 'FOIL' method to multiply 2 brackets?
foil is the easiest way to solve this as MrNood said. it means first, outer, inner, last just foil the answers and the right answer will be the same as the equation
Can you explain what to do first?
if your bracket are (a+b) (c+d) then you multiply the F irst pair of numbers ac O utside pair ad I nside pair bc L ast pair bd then add them all together ac + ad + bc + bd
So write each pair of brackets like that Multiply the pairs For example the first one is (2x + 3)(2x + 2) So F irst pair is 2x * 2x O utside pair is 2x * 2 I nside pair is 3 * 2x L ast pair is 3 * 2 Add all those together and simplify, to see if they come out to be the same as the equation 4x^2 - 11x + 6
Where did (2x +3)(2x +2) come from?
It's the first of the possible answers You need to do it for all the answers until you find the right one
F irst pair is 2x * 2x O utside pair is 2x * 2 I nside pair is 3 * 2x L ast pair is 3 * 2 Add all those together and simplify
Okay well that wasn't the answer. It says that the last one was correct...
I didn't say it was the answer - I said you need to do this method to all the options until you find which is correct
I tried, but I can't understand. I just starting this unit, and its so hard. :(

It seems that you replied much quicker than you could have done the suggestion above did oyu do this? F irst pair is 2x * 2x O utside pair is 2x * 2 I nside pair is 3 * 2x L ast pair is 3 * 2 Add all those together and simplify If so - show the steps you took
quote "I tried, but I can't understand. I just starting this unit, and its so hard. :(" It will remain hard until you actually try the methods required. Mostly maths appears 'hard' because of the notation and the formulas. Once you use them a few times their meaning becomes clear, and the 'difficulty' becomes a routine process to get the right answer. If you are just starting - then please try one or two attempts at multiplying the brackets using the FOIL method It will soon become a tool you can use in your future maths work
