dont know where to start, help please! will fan and medal! (2 questions)
Which of the following expressions are equivalent? Justify your reasoning.
this is on a con nexus test
@Icedragon50 cool? i dont even know what that is
Hello.
@zeesbrat3 Hi! think you can help?
Yes. When the exponent to a variable is negative, you find the reciprocal. Making B x
Does that make sense?
Yeah, I think I understand.
The -1 turns positive, right?
then isn't it x^1/1?
Yes which is?
OH I see
wow, okay. so it's divide by 1, which make it just x^1 and x^1 is just x, right?
Yep! Good job
Now, you have to simplify the rest of the options to figure out which is equivalent. Once they are all simplified, it is easy to tell.
For C and D, you have to remember that when exponents are multiplied together, you add. When they are divided by each other you subtract. Since A is already simplified, you dont have to worry about that just yet.
Alright then
So what did you get for C?
is d also just x then?
Why is D x?
because the exponents add up to 3/3, which is 1 right? or am i missing something
No you are correct, I was just making sure you knew why.
Oh, thank you! So then it's x^1, (or just x) :D right??
Yep
I'll still try the others, since it's just good to know how to do them. For future reference. If that's alright, could you make sure I get it right?
Sure
I'll try to simplify C
so x^11
Well, not quite. There is the radical to consider
\[\sqrt[10]{x^{11}}\] like that ?
Perfect!
im not sure what to do with the radical... or is that all i can do to simplify?
Well, since it is technically x^10 * x^1, you can take the 10 out but it still wouldnt be equivalent to B.
hm, alright then.. how about A then? can i do anything with that?
It's already simplified
Right. So then I guess I have my answer. Thank you so much for all of your help, it's really appreciated!
You're welcome
