which two elements would react if i mixed chlorine, lithium, and nickel?
Is this from FLVS?
no from iluvlorde. new user. sorry.
It's okay... I'll try to help
thanks.
I'm not sure... sorry
its okay.
but thanks for trying!
Reaction of lithium with the halogens https://www.webelements.com/lithium/chemistry.html Lithium metal reacts vigorously with all the halogens to form lithium halides. So, it reacts with fluorine, F2, chlorine, Cl2, bromine, I2, and iodine, I2, to form respectively lithium(I) fluoride, LiF, lithium(I) chloride, LiCl, lithium(I) bromide, LiBr, and lithium(I) iodide, LiI. 2Li(s) + F2(g) → LiF(s) 2Li(s) + Cl2(g) → LiCl(s) 2Li(s) + Br2(g) → LiBr(s) 2Li(s) + I2(g) → LiI(s) Reaction of nickel with the halogens https://www.webelements.com/nickel/chemistry.html Nickel metal does react with fluorine gas, F2, but only slowly. This makes nickel an important metal for containers of fluorine. The dichloride, NiCl2, dibromide, NiBr2, and diiodide, NiI2, are formed in the reactions of nickel metal and chlorine, Cl2, bromine, Br2, or iodine, I2. Ni(s) + Cl2(g) → NiCl2(s) [yellow] Ni(s) + Br2(g) → NiBr2(s) [yellow] Ni(s) + I2(g) → NiI2(s) [black]
I think it would be lithium and chlorine would react with each other in the one to one ratio. Nickel can react with the chlorine but in a one to two ratio. The reaction with the nickel would be slower so the chlorine would have already bonded with the lithium as lithium wants to get rid of that one electron and chlorine wants that one electron so the reaction would be faster. I don't know if that is completely right but that's what I would put.
thanks everyone!
