The assault that decided the battle was coined "Pickett's Charge", which was when the Confederate army attack union lines, however it backfired and forced Lee to withdraw his army in the direction of Virginia on July 4th (of all days, lol)

The Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker and then (from June 28) by Maj. Gen. George G. Meade, pursued Lee, defeated him at the Battle of Gettysburg, but allowed him to escape back to Virginia. Lee's army slipped away from Federal contact at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on June 3, 1863.

In almost every sense, the Battle of Gettysburg was a defeat for the CSA. They suffered casualties (killed, wounded, captured and missing) of more than one-third of their entire force. They failed to achieve any of their major objectives but one. They exhausted their supplies and had to retreat back to Virginia.

The battle was not a defeat in some senses. During the battle, the southern forces were nearly always on the advance. They seriously weakened two northern corps, and inflicted huge casualties on the northern forces. They actually captured a few cannon. During the retreat, their army was intact and remained an effective fighting force.

The Confederate objectives were to break the Union forces, take a major city of the north, force either the capitulation of the Lincoln government or cause it to retreat in chaos, and to enable European countries to recognize the CSA as independent. Of these objectives, only the first was partially completed; the remainder did not occur.

The Southern armies would never again mount a massive invasion and although they would make effective attacks, they never mounted a huge coordinated attack again.
