Why does it take some time for the match to ignite?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

friction?

OpenStudy (cuanchi):

activation energy? the question is kind of vague...some time it is not quantitative can be milliseconds to years

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ignition is the same as combustion. The match has Phosphorus Sulphide or Disulphide, if I am not mistaken... When the match goes against such compound in that brownish layer, the force creates friction between such compounds to react. The reaction is not too spontaneous, as the match needs more oxygen in the surroundings to burn. The reason why in a cold or windy environment, the fire goes off quickly, as there is not much oxygen available, given that wind wafts oxygen at a great rate.
