like terms; examples:
\(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle 2x^2+3x^2=5x^2 }\)
\(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle 9x^w-8x^w=1x^w=x^w }\)
\(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle 2y-5y=-3y }\)
\(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle 14+13=27 }\)
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
those are examples of the terms you can combine (their coefficients - the numbers in front of the variable - don't matter. And the like term is defined if there is a same variable and it is raised to the same power.)
OpenStudy (some.random.cool.kid):
where did you get 8x?
OpenStudy (solomonzelman):
but you can NOT combine (examples)
\(\large\color{red}{ \displaystyle 3x^4+2x^3 }\)
(although variable is same, the powers of x are NOT the same)
\(\large\color{red}{ \displaystyle 2x^p+3a^p }\)
(although the powers of the variable are the same (power of p), because variables are NOT the same.)
\(\large\color{red}{ \displaystyle 5+3x }\) (one term contains variable, the other term does not)

@some.random.cool.kid
I didn't get 8x. these that I posted are just examples.

you don't need any work, you combined all the like terms, and now this polynomial is written in a simple form.
