OpenStudy (photon336):

Can someone explain what electron affinity is and how this quantify changes on the periodic table?

rvc (rvc):

Ability of an atom to gain electron in its neutral state

rvc (rvc):

This is what i think about electron affinity.

rvc (rvc):

The atoms in need of electron will have higher electron affinity. It will also acquire a extra negative charge due to gain of electrons.

OpenStudy (photon336):

@rvc thanks, ok so if it's a neutral atoms ability to gain an electron, more electronegative atoms would have a higher electron affinity?

rvc (rvc):

yep

OpenStudy (photon336):

@rvc so as we go from left to right across a period Electron affinity increases, would this mean more negative EA values?

rvc (rvc):

Metals wont have high electronegativity because they tend to lose electron

rvc (rvc):

*electron affinity

rvc (rvc):

yes @Photon336

rvc (rvc):

the latter part im not sure but yes it increases from left to right
