All but which one of the following bacterial structures are external to the cell? a) plasmid b) capsule c) peptidoglycan And why? you choose that answer . Thanks

OpenStudy (misssunshinexxoxo):

Which name is missing?

OpenStudy (misssunshinexxoxo):

Plasmid and Capsule are there; what's not?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think plasmid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i dont know how to explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At first i think the capsule, because it is external to the cell. So, it is wrong. the right answer is plasmid.the only thing i know about plasmid is it described as an extra chromosomal DNA in a bacterial cell

OpenStudy (misssunshinexxoxo):

"Peptidoglycan, also known as murein, is a polymer consisting of sugars and amino acids that forms a mesh-like layer outside the plasma membrane of most bacteria, forming the cell wall."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But I dont know why. it is plasmid, the bacterial structures are not external to the cell

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain for me why it is plasmid? I dont understand it

OpenStudy (misssunshinexxoxo):

"A plasmid is a small DNA molecule that is physically separate from, and can replicate independently of, chromosomal DNA within a cell. Most commonly found as small circular, double-stranded DNA molecules in bacteria, plasmids are sometimes present in archaea and eukaryotic organisms."
