Solve for x.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

This is a right triangle and Pythagorean theorem tells us |dw:1436843339059:dw| So you have \(5^2+8^2=x^2\). Does this make sense?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

that should say, pythagorean theorem tells us \(a^2+b^2=c^2\)

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

after we figure out \[5^2 \] and \[8^2 \] we need x (or c or whatever side is missing) by itself so we need to square root both sides.

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

ok that's the c part we're missing (the longest side of the triangle-- hypotenuse)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 squared + 8 squared = x squared 25 + 64 = c squared

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

good so far..

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

so what's 25+64 ?
