Graph a triangle (XYZ) and reflect it over the line y=x to create triangle X'Y'Z'. Describe the transformation using words. Draw a line segment from point X to the reflecting line, and then draw a line segment from point X' to the reflecting line. What do you notice about the two line segments you drew? Do you think you would see the same characteristic if you drew the line segment connecting Y with the reflecting line and then Y' with the reflecting line? How do you know?

This might help explain things, but it will not give you an direct answer: http://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/transformations.html Try the problem after reviewing this website.

@e.mccormick can you help

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

There seems to be missing info

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is the whole question

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so they want you to make up coordinates for X,Y, and Z?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

review your flvs lessons, maybe it will help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have done that already

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

ok pick a random point that doesn't lie on the line y = x what point did you pick?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3,2

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what do you get if you reflected that over the line y = x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Try graphing it on graph paper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 1,3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

close

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

reflecting (x,y) over y = x gives you (y,x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2,3

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

(3,2) --> (2,3), yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help me form an explanation?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

plot those two points and the line y = x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then connect those two points with a segment. What do you notice about the line y = x and the segment?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

did you plot those things on the coordinate grid?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

can you see how the segment is perpendicular to the line?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

and how the line cuts the segment in half?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no
