Question

Any recommendations on books to help with a high school chemistry class? I'm starting that in a few months and I'd like to get acquainted with the basic concepts before I start school. Any help is appreciated thanks

In regards to books, I'm not really sure. I just stuck to the provided chemistry book given to me. However, sometimes people here in OS will post some things to help people out. For example, @Photon336 has a tutorial up for balancing chemical equations, which is extremely useful in chemistry

first off, congrats for taking the initiative to get prepared early! it's good to see students who are invested in their schoolwork and want to get ahead

if possible, I would try to obtain a copy of the textbook being used in your school and read the first few chapters (should cover things like naming compounds, moles, balancing reactions, basic properties of atoms, the periodic table etc.), or visit a local library

an AP Chemistry review book might be helpful (although it might cover more than your course requires) in presenting the information in a clean, bare-bones fashion without the extra fluff that most textbooks have. I'm also taking chemistry in the fall, and I've been preparing for it by using http://www.chem4kids.com/map.html as a study site. Their diagrams and writings allowed me to easily grasp chemistry in general.

If you want some really nice introductions and explanations to pretty much any topic in chemistry, then I'd also recommend:

www.chemguide.co.uk

The website itself can be a little tricky to search around in, but it's aimed at high school students in the UK and it's usually very clear in its explanations, with lots of examples included. As has already been mentioned, there's also tutorials done here on OpenStudy by users on certain key chemistry topics which can give people some problems.
