OpenStudy (moazzam07):

Write an expression using subtraction to find the distance between the two divers. (5 points) Show your work and solve for the distance using additive inverses. (5 points)

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

please help

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

please help

OpenStudy (freckles):

do you know the distance between -2.5 and 0?

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

yes

OpenStudy (freckles):

ok and what is it?

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

-2.5

OpenStudy (freckles):

and what is the distance between 0 and 1.5?

OpenStudy (freckles):

well distances are positive or zero

OpenStudy (freckles):

so I think you mean to say 2.5

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

yes they are

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

oh yes

OpenStudy (freckles):

the distance from -2.5 to 0 is 2.5 the distance from 0 to 1.5 is 1.5 the distance between -2.5 and 1.5 is the sum of the distances from -2.5 to 0 and 0 to 1.5

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

-4 or 4

OpenStudy (freckles):

I thought you were looking for distance what is the negative number there for?

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

to represent the A distance from the ship wreck

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

i wrote this as an answer

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

A = -2.5 B = 1.5 - 2.5 - 1.5 = - 4 This number is also known as the opposite (number), sign change, and negation. so by using addictive inverse i am basically changing the 1.5 into -1,5 so, - 1.5 + - 2.5 = - 4

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

am i wrong?

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

i think i am

OpenStudy (freckles):

anyways the distance from -2.5 to 0 can be found by doing 0-(-2.5) and the distance from 0 to 1.5 can be found by doing 1.5-0 and the distance from -2.5 to 1.5 can by found by adding those distances \[(1.5-0)+(0-(-2.5)) \\ (1.5)+(-(-2.5)) \\ 1.5-(-2.5)\] we have written the subtraction expression they seeked

OpenStudy (freckles):

we can write it to an equivalent addition expression by using the fact that -(-2.5)=+2.5 so 1.5-(-2.5)=1.5+2.5

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

ok

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

so 4 right?

OpenStudy (freckles):

yes -4 doesn't makes sense distance is only positive or zero

OpenStudy (moazzam07):

ok thanks
