To me, it seems as if he(she?) views everything around as better. For example, the writer goes to sleep without dinner, but there is bread at other houses, while there isn't at his own. Using the beauty of nature, then mentioning storms, to me, seems like just a broad view of nature. The bread seemed to make him happier than ever, so all of nature was enjoyable.
