We all find life to have challenges as we overcome them and become better versions of ourselves. There’s a point however, when you’ve been beaten too many times. “Able to take failures in her stride”, that’s a quote from my psychological evaluation preformed in the first grade. My question is how the little girl, become me? I was diagnosed with Specific Learning Disorder in Writing. However, I was never told which Specific Learning Disorder I had. At least not by the school system. I knew writing had to do with it, but that was it. There’s what seems like an endless amount of learning disabilities and processing disorders, but rather than label a person specifically, were labeled under a general category.

I’m a huge believer in labels. They help us understand each other. Labels are a form of communication, but if we only label people half way then we’re losing half of the information. Why I was diagnosed with something as vague as “Specific Learning Disorder” rather than what they really meant “Dyslexia”, I will never understand. Unfortunately most learning disabilities will only be labeled as SLD (Specific Learning Disorder).

In my background information it stated that I had excellent social skills. When I read that I laughed. My entire life I’ve been socially off and bullied for it. I never understood why, yet in my background information it said I had “excellent social skills”. This baffled me. Then I realized that they concluded this by me talking to them, adults. I’ve always known how to communicate with adults. Your just polite and answer questions. There is no trying to fit in because you know where you stand. I guess they were right; I do have excellent social skills, just not with people my own age.
