There are 8 mangoes in a bag.the chance of a rotten mango being packed is 0.05.if 4 bags are chosen at random ,find the probability that all the bags do not contain any rotten mango.

The answer is 0.01283...but I do not know how to solve it!!!!

@saseal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you sure its 0.01283?

OpenStudy (marigirl):

what method would you use to go about this question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk im not very good in probability yet

I don't do stats.

OpenStudy (kropot72):

The probability of one randomly selected bag having no rotten mango is given by \[\large (1-0.05)^{8}=0.6634\] The probability of 4 randomly selected bags having no rotten mango is therefore: \[\large 0.6634^{4}=0.1937\]

ikr thats why i asked him if hes sure about the answer

Finally I managed to solve the q....the working was 4c0 multiply with 0.6634 to the power of 0 and multiply with 1- 0.6634to the power of 4 .....anyway tq guys

OpenStudy (kropot72):

@Babypanda "Finally I managed to solve the q....the working was 4c0 multiply with 0.6634 to the power of 0 and multiply with 1- 0.6634to the power of 4 ....." 0.6634 is the probability that one randomly selected bag has no rotten mango. But you have used (1 - 0.6634), which is the probability that one randomly selected bag has one or more rotten mango. Therefore your working finds the probability that all four randomly chosen bags have one or more rotten mango. However the question asks for the probability that all the bags do not contain any rotten mango. So the result that you have obtained is not what the question asked for.
