What is the range of the graph of y = -3(x - 4)2 + 1? y>=3 y<=3 y>=1 y<=1

OpenStudy (welshfella):

HinT: what is the lowest possibly value of (x - 4) ^2 ?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

- remember that a square of a real number cannt be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhm...i have no clue...4?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

plug in x = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be y=1

OpenStudy (welshfella):

when x = 4 y = 1 yes

OpenStudy (welshfella):

because (x - 4)^2 would be 0

OpenStudy (welshfella):

the lowest possible value of (x - 4)^2 is 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so y>=1 ?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

No because we have a negative coefficient -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay this makes no sense what so ever.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y<=1 ? because if you plug in 5 for x you get a negative number for y

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yes - thats was i was going to say and if you plug in x = 3 you get a negative value for y also the (x -4)2) is always going to be positive so -3(x -4^2 is always negative

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so its y <= 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much :)

OpenStudy (welshfella):
