Focus on the rectangle of blocks in the center of the figure. I the first figure, this rectangle is 3 x 1, in the second figure it is 4 x 2, in the third figure it is 5 x 3, etc. Then there are two extra blocks added on, on on upper right and one on lower left. So, if we let \(n\) be the number of the term in the sequence, the total number of blocks in each figure is given by\[B = \left( n+2 \right)n +2\]You may expand and simplify if you like, but if you want the number of blocks in the 5th figure, just use n=5 in the above equation.
