Why do two resistors in parallel together contain less resistance than the same two resistors in series?

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

the potential drop across the 2 resistors in parallel is the same as it would be across 1 resistor. so twice as much current will flow. NB: it is the "resistance" of "the arrangement" that decreases, and that is a more abstract notion as the actual resistance of the individual resistors does not change, there are just more of them to conduct electricity.
