I would really appreciate help with this!! The following table depicts the Nobel Prize winners in some categories by country from 1901 to 1998. Use this table to answer the questions that follow.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a) If a winner is chosen at random, what is the probability that he or she won in the field of medicine, given that he or she is from the US?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b) If a winner is chosen at random, what it the probability that he or she won an award in physics or chemistry, given that he or she was from the Soviet Union?

OpenStudy (phi):

given that she is from the US? step1: add up all the medals for the US she won in the field of medicine, find the # of US medals in medicine and divide by the number from step 1

OpenStudy (phi):

what do you get for part a) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

82 / 198 = 0.4141 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi is that right??

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So for part b) would it then be 17 / 18 = 0.9444

OpenStudy (phi):

for b) it is almost the same approach given that he or she was from the Soviet Union? step 1: add up number of medals for the Sov. Union physics or chemistry add up medals the USSR won for physics and chemistry divide by the number from step 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

17 / 18 = 0.9444 right?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, I have one more question with this table.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c) If a winner is chosen at random, what is the probability that he or she is from the United States given that the award was won in the field of medicine?

OpenStudy (phi):

given that the award was won in the field of medicine step 1: add up all the medals for medicine from the US: find the # of US medals in medicine and divide by step 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

82 / 144 = 0.5694 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you soo much!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I really appreciate it
