The following is the graph of function g(x) if h = -4 and the parent function is f(x) = x2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i understand where the -4 comes from, but the x^2 is confusing me.

Nnesha (nnesha):

x^2 is original graph of the quadratic equation (parent function )

Nnesha (nnesha):

|dw:1439741221254:dw| like this so they are saying -4 is shifting from the original graph(0)

Nnesha (nnesha):

vertex form y=a(x-h)^2+k k= vertical shift h= horizontal shift

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

using vertex form, you can always plug in numbers to check.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. thank you.

Nnesha (nnesha):

if k is positive you should shift the f(x) some units above the x-axis if k is negative shift below the x-axis some units for horizontal you would be careful abt signs if h is negative shift the function some units to the Right side if h is positive shift the function some units to the left side

Nnesha (nnesha):

\[y=a(x-(-4))^2+k\] when negative by negative 4 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

Nnesha (nnesha):

you got it ? so what's ur answer ? @Penguin7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

true!

Nnesha (nnesha):

yep
