why there are two different charges i.e. positive (proton) and negative(electron) ?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

because there just are, no real reason exists

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Well, you could give a limited explanation about the charges of protons and electrons from the quark level. But if you are referring to why proton has a positive charge and electron has a negative charge well there is no reason they are arbitrary

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Sure, i guess you can say that a proton has 2 up quarks (each with charge \(+\dfrac{2}{3}e\)) and a down quark (with charge \(-\dfrac{1}{3}e\)), and that an electron is a lepton with a -1e charge... but that just raises other questions, like "why do quarks have charges?" OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Ya it just keeps adding more questions then answers

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Not only that, but it addresses why "why" questions are not always suitable questions.
